William Hogarth 1697 - 1764.

Times of the Day - Night.    1738.

Apparently the oak leaves in the Freemason's hat, the oaken boughs on the sign, and the blazing bonfire indicate that this is the night of 29th May, on which night was commemorated the restoration of Charles II to the throne.  The scene is set in Charing Cross, in sight of the equestrian statue of Charles I. At this period the street was narrow and was furnished on one side with the Rummer Tavern, and on the other with the Cardigan's Head, two notorious bagnios of the time (i.e. inns which also served as brothels).  The Salisbury coach which has just set out has been overturned and the passenger are terrified.  To add to their terror a mischievous boy has thrown a firework into the carriage.  The drunken person in the foreground attired as a freemason and guided by a servant with a lantern is said to be Sir Thomas de Veil, a prominent politician.  The discharge of the contents of a chamber pot on his head is a comment on the respect shown to him.  Through the open window we see a man being shaved.  Evidently he is also losing some blood at the same time, as the sign indicates.  The general impression is that nighttime in Hogarth's London was not a very wonderful experience.
