John Wilkes Esquire 1763
| Wilkes was instrumental in obtaining the right of the press to report and criticise debates in parliament. He was also a champion of individual liberty against the power of the state. Hogarth, being an ardent royalist, did not much like him. Wilkes was said to be one of the ugliest men of his day, but he claimed that 'it took him only half an hour to talk away his face' and win over the listener. Consequently Hogarth did not have to overstate his image to satirize the man. However the engraving, one of Hogarth's last, displeased many and won him few friends. Wilkes apparently did not take great offence, for he knew he had a fearful squint, but he said, calmly enough, that he did not make himself. Hogarth died the following year. | ||
