The Wood Nymph

Painted by Samuel Woodeforde R.A. 1764-1817                                   Engraved by John R. Smith.

The hat she is wearing is perhaps like the 'platted hive of straw' which the distressed maid wears in
A Lover's Complaint, Stanza 2, line 8.

This print taken from English Rural Life in the 18th. Century.

Upon her head a platted hive of straw,

Which fortified her visage from the sun,

Whereon the thought might think sometime it saw

The carcase of a beauty spent and done.

Time had not scythed all that youth begun,

Nor youth all quit; but, spite of Heaven's fell rage

Some beauty peeped through lattice of seared age.
